The Real Property Section invites you to learn about land use, permitting, and other related real estate issues in connection with the formation and operation of wineries and cideries in Maryland.
Participants will have a unique opportunity to engage in discussion with the owners of these establishments, amidst the ambience of a vineyard and apple orchard, and learn how they successfully overcame legal challenges that could have otherwise resulted in sour grapes.
Who: Any and all members and nonmembers of the Real Property Section
What: Not your average CLE bringing you to the subject properties and owners/ operators dealing with these issues
When: Saturday, September 21, 2013, 10 a.m. until approximately 4:30 p.m.
How: A charter bus from a location in Baltimore City (TBD) will depart at 10:00 a.m. for Mt Airy, MD (a little under an hour drive from Baltimore) to visit Elk Run Vineyard and Winery, a winery that has been producing wines since 1983. There, we will tour the vineyard, sample wines, and listen to the owner speak about various legal issues in connection with the winery. After time to enjoy a lunch that is provided as part of this trip, we will set out for Distillery Lane Ciderworks, the first licensed cidery in Maryland, for a tour of the orchard and a discussion with the owner of the legal issues confronting the cidery. Late September is the harvest season for both apples and certain types of grapes, providing for a unique opportunity to observe the harvesting process as well as enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Cost: Includes: (i) roundtrip transportation in a comfortable charter bus equipped with wifi and restroom aboard; (ii) light breakfast provided upon boarding of the bus in the morning; (iii) catered box lunch and drink; (iv) tour and tasting fees for both the cidery and winery (the cidery provides a commemorative glass as part of its tour fee); and (v) educational materials provided by the Association of Maryland Wineries.
